With the first ever AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards just over a month away, excitement is building and on Monday, 28 January at 21:30 the names of the nominees will be announced in a special edition of the glam lifestyle series 53 Extra.

South African viewers can catch this edition of 53 Extra on AfricaMagic Entertainment, AfricaMagic, AfricaMagic Movies, AfricaMagic Movies 1 and AfricaMagic World/Magic World, ensuring that a wide range of DStv audiences can tune in, regardless of what bouquet they subscribe to!

The highly anticipated AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA’s), which are being held in association with MultiChoice and sponsored by Nigeria’s number 1 low sugar malt drink, Amstel Malta, will present awards to the best and brightest of the African film and television industry in March this year. The initiative was designed to recognize and reward African excellence and creativity, and in addition to having professsionally judged categories, will also include some categories in which viewers themselves will vote for winners.

With the focus now on the key nominee announcement next week, AfricaMagic has confirmed that gorgeous 53 Extra leading ladies Eku Edewor and Dolapo Oni will be front and centre as the important nominees news is made public.

Joining them will be Jara hosts, the always suave Uti Nwachukwu (Winner, Big Brother All Stars) and charismatic star Helen Paul, on whose Nollywood update show the awards were first launched in October 2012. Since that time, entries for the prestigious awards, to be held at glittering ceremonies in Lagos, Nigeria on 8 and 9 March, have flooded in.

Over 350 entries were received in total, a figure that M-Net’s MD for Africa, Biola Alabi finds extremely positive. “We had a clear idea of how many entries we could expect for such an awards initiative in Africa, based on other events of this nature. This is a specialist event that calls for entries from a very specific professional industry. As such we anticipated about 250 entries in total. So we’re pleased that we were able to exceed our expectations in year one.”

She continues, “The AfricaMagic team thanks everyone who entered. Whether you’re named a nominee or not, we’re very grateful for your participation. In doing so, you’ve made an impressive statement that the African film and TV industry is making significant strides forward. Our thanks also go out to our judges who dedicated their time and expertise to finalizing the nominees list. And finally, crucially, we are absolutely delighted to welcome Nigerian Breweries onto the project as a key and vital sponsor whose invaluable support is deeply appreciated.”

MultiChoice Africa CEO, Mr. Nico Meyer has also endorsed this initiative as the best thing that has happened for the African TV entertainment and film industries. “As MultiChoice, we can only be proud to be associated with the AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards. The investment made by MultiChoice is a show of our commitment to the development of skills and talent in the continent. As such, these awards have become a natural inclusion to our social investment portfolio which includes education and media. For us, it is a way of giving back by providing a platform to nurture and showcase local talent.”

The judging panel for the AMVCA’s will also be announced on www.africamagic.tv on Monday evening, 28 January. Led by head judge Femi Odugbemi, the panel convened in Johannesburg early in January to finalize the nominees for the awards.

According to Walter Drenth, Marketing Director NB Plc, the partnership between AMVCA and Amstel Malta, is to reinforce the message of “Being the Best” by recognizing and celebrating exceptional, world-class talents.

Tonight was the first time R&B singer Chris Brown performed in Cape Town and boy did he disappoint! Look he is a great entertainer, dancer and an all-round musical genius on stage but he just didn’t deliver the goods in a below par vocal display, where his dance skills seemed to be more eye-catching than his actual singing.

Prior to me attending tonight’s concert, I heard the mixed reviews about his Carpe Diem Tour in SA, and the fact that he only played at each venue for just about an hour.

Armed with that info in mind, what I anticipated was going to be a lackluster performance – and he actually lived up to that expectation in many forms . . .

Singing live and dancing at the same time are genuine masterful art forms that not all singers get right. Chris, who is visibly thin and even went so far as to smoke a blunt (joint) on stage, showed the audience at Grand West Casino and Entertainer (on the first night of his tonight show in Cape Town) just why some critics compare him to being the “modern day” Michael Jackson.

There were  moments throughout the performance where I felt they lacked heart and soul, instead of the monumental crotch-grabbing tactics he pulled on stage. We know he likes to dance and can definitely bust a move, but then too on some other songs he managed to provide good stage presence.

I’m glad I got to see him live though! Chris Brown is a musical generation superstar that will keep entertaining for his fans! Check out this video with him on stage :-)

Just when all you Lady Gaga fans or Monsters thought you could handle the Lady Gaga fever in South Africa this summer – thanks to her spectacular performances of her Born This Way Ball in Johannesburg and Cape Town earlier this month – now you too could own Lady Gaga’s enthralling fragrance, LADY GAGA FAME.

Known to be the most followed celebrity on social media to date and one of the world’s biggest entertainers of our current generation, Lady Gaga, released LADY GAGA FAME in September this year. LADY GAGA FAME, which is Gaga’s first fragrance, was released through the Artist’s own Haus Laboratories in association with Coty, and it’s the latest breakthrough expression of her creativity.

There’s no doubt about it: Lady Gaga or “Mother Monster” (as she is known to her fans) knows how to push the boundaries in every projects she works on. And LADY GAGA FAME doesn’t disappoint with her debut fragrance – with it being the first ever black Eau de Parfum that sprays clear and becomes invisible once airborne. The black-to-clear fragrance is also a fantastic innovation of patent pending fluid technology, while the uniquely styled bottle was designed in collaboration with Nick Knight, and the ad campaign was directed and photographed by Steven Klein.

LADY GAGA FAME is not just about the bottle, or the black fragrance! The scent is built around three main accords: dark, sensual and light. The dark accord was inspired by Belladonna, the deadly nightshade possessed by haunted beauties since the 18th century. The fragrance evolves to a sensual accord of opulence, a fusion of dripping honey, saffron and apricot nectar. And lastly, the light accord whispers magnificence. The rich floral layer of crushed Tiger Orchid & Jasmine Sambac embodies timeless beauty – giving LADY GAGA FAME it’s unusual, yet sexy scent.

After attending the concert of the world’s current mega popstar Lady Gaga last night right here in Cape Town, I am  seriously still reeling with excitement and shock over just how a brilliant performer and vocalist she is live on stage. And boy did she deliver to her South African fans on stage at Cape Town Stadium in The Mother City of Cape Town.

Cape Town was the second stop of her South African leg of her Born This Way World Tour - her first time performing in the country.

Forget the dramatics, the paparazzi, the meat dresses and even the haters – watching this video of her acapella version of her number one hit, BORN THIS WAY, proves there’s without a doubt that Lady Gaga is one of the world’s greatest popstars and musicians to date! (She sang this while inviting some devout fans on stage to sing with her this spectacular song!)

Belting out songs from her two chart-topping albums, The Fame and Born This Way, Lady Gaga proved to her South African fans, or monsters as she calls them, just why she is currently the world’s most popular celebrity on social media and one of the current generation’s biggest musicians and entertainers.

Whether donning a meat dresses, giving birth on stage or even gyrating with her back up dancers and even simulating oral sex, Lady Gaga pulled out all the stops to show her South African fans why she’s the current Queen of Pop. One of the highlights of the concert was the opening act – where Gaga (or Mother Monster as she is known) arrived on stage in a horse. Here’s how she did it . . .

All in all, Lady Gaga’s performance in Cape Town was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen in my life and it’s going to be hard to top such a formidable on stage performance from any other acts visiting South Africa in the near future! The Mother Monster has spoken!
