AfricaMagic’s Big Brother Africa has smashed records since it first launched and with it’s eighth season already in production, this week the show’s fans emphatically proved that it remains arguably the biggest and most popular television series on the continent when they helped the show to hit a milestone 1 million Facebook likes!

Having championed the concept of audience engagement from its very first day on air, Big Brother Africa has reached out to DStv viewers in a variety of innovative ways including the option for viewers to send messages directly to the screen of the live 24/7 broadcast, and in that way sharing their thoughts, opinions and feelings about the show directly with others watching in 47 countries.

But as social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have grown rapidly across Africa, so too has the reach of the series as fans dissect actions in the Big Brother house, anticipate twists and turns and share breaking news in what is a remarkable display of African dialogue around a program that is both hugely entertaining and at the same time, socially informative.

“This is social engagement at its finest. At one level, it’s simply Africans gathering around a specific topic whose conversations are centralized around Big Brother. But on another level, it speaks to the continuous desire for connection that Africans have. It clearly demonstrates the growing reality of pan-Africanism, the increasing sense that Africans are stronger together than separately. It’s a remarkable achievement for a show like Big Brother Africa and one that is only possible because a million people made it so,” says Biola Alabi, MD for M-Net Africa.

She continues, “Fans of this show challenge us every day to make something that they will enjoy, they push usevery day to keep the concept fresh, they motivate us every day to keep Big Brother Africa dynamic. So this is their success. Our thanks go to every single one of them. And from Sunday, 26 May we’ll bring them something fun and new that they will not want to miss!”

With the entries for the show closing on Valentine’s Day, Big Brother Africa 8 is set to run live 24/7 for 91 days on DStv, starting 26 May. For more information on the series, check out these online homes: www.africamagic.tv;  Twitter ; Facebook  and YouTube.

Produced for AfricaMagic by Endemol SA, Big Brother Africa currently has 279 000 Twitter followers. In 2012, the show drew over 2.3 million messages to TV, over 2 million unique online browsers and 128 000 000 website page views.

Things are heating up in preparation of the new season of Tropika Island of Treasure, which was shot on location in Jamaica last year. The first episode premieres on 16 February on SABC1 and I can’t wait to see what the new season entails.

In case you forgot, the cast comprises oh-so-sexy celebrities AKA, DA L.E.S, Phuti Khomo, Pearl Thusi, Jay Anstey, Reeva Steenkamp and Mario Ogle, as well as the seven lucky public winners Katleho Molai, Mbali Ngaleka, Genevieve Amy Arulappan, Sinethemba Buthelezi, Duan Wanty and Kefentse Moagi.

This week’s episode on Kagiso’s Island of Treasure is hilarious: Kagiso Lediga has a breakdown on camera! Why, you may ask? Well, that’s what you get when you piss off your fellow co-host, former Miss Jamaica Rosina Casserly, and you decide to shoot the entire online TV show by yourself. Not a smart move there, Kagiso!

Remember everything he said back in Episode 2 about needing a good team? Well Kagiso seems to think he was wrong. He is of the opinion that “all you need is yourself”.

“I’m a one-man film crew and I’m hitting the streets of Jamaica to prove I’ve got what it takes to host the Tropika Island of Treasure 5!” Dream on, Kagiso!

After upsetting Rosina last week while visiting the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Kagiso’s entire crew abandoned him – leaving him to shoot the remainder of his online TV series by himself. This week, Kagiso walks the beaches and streets of Kingston, aiming to work all alone – a move which clearly sends him into complete meltdown mode – great for viewing pleasure. He even pops in at the Nelson Mandela Park, where he meets locals to find out about their knowledge about the legendary South African.

On the one hand, one can’t help but laugh at at his failure in keeping a camera crew together but viewers are all going to feel sorry for his cocky behaviour. It’s pretty apparent very fast, that Kagiso regret’s his behaviour and realises he can’t do the show by himself any more! A heartwarming moment, indeed.

Don’t miss next week’s episode when Kagiso aims to track down Rosina to apologise. He says: “I’ve never been one for saying sorry, but sometimes (very, VERY rarely), it just has to be done. It’s back to Rosina’s studio with me to make amends, find my team and finish this thing once and for all.”

Life is clearly lonely on the streets, so good luck to you Kagiso! Check out this week’s episode to see he’s public meltdown!

Kagiso’s Island of Treasure is finally becoming to be such a treat! After visiting one of Jamaica’s top sports clubs last week, SA comedian Kagiso Lediga visits the Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica this week – the online TV show’s 8th episode.

I must admit that Kagiso is only starting to grab my attention and interest for Jamaica since last week’s episode… Finally he is getting somewhere in his quest to outshine 5FM DJ, DJ Fresh, one of the co-hosts of season five of Tropika Island of Treasure. (which premiers next  month on SABC1). With enough buzz about the season starting to kick into gear, I can’t wait to see how it will pan out and whether a celebrity or a public contestant will walk away with the R1 million prize money.

Back to this week’s episode . . . Kagiso does a fine job of alienating his camera crew and the beautiful Tropika Island of Treasure co-host and former Miss Jamaica, Rosina Casserly, when they visit the Bob Marley Museum to shed some light on the history of reggae and show off his skills as a serious documentarian.

While he doesn’t exactly showcase much of what’s inside the museum itself, reggae fans and die-hard Marley fans will appreciate graffiti of music legend Bob Marley outside the museum’s walls as well as some of his famous music lyrics echoed on these walls too. But what could possibly go wrong?

Kagiso’s quest for fame and outshining his cast and crew become a little too much, as he angers Rosina and his crew – to the point where he is left standing all alone outside the museum.

Next week, Kagiso has to pick up his bruised ego, knowing that it didn’t go so well as he had hoped at the Bob Marley Museum. He says: “It’s ok, I’m a smart guy. I can do this on my own. I’ll show them. They will see.”

Will he survive without his crew? Will Rosina forgive Kagiso for his arrogance? Check out this week’s episode…
